Maira Nadeem

Team Lead

Maira Nadeem is a fourth-year biochemistry student at NJIT. As a research assistant in the Endocrine Disruption and Chemical Biology lab, she studies the effects of chemicals that interfere with hormones, better known as endocrine-disrupting chemicals, such as plastics and phthalates on the female reproductive system. Her project focuses on assessing the female reproductive toxicity of nanoplastics using a mouse model. With her passion rooted in female reproductive health, she has identified a need to advocate and raise awareness for healthcare causes primarily affecting women. She co-founded and is president of the Women's Initiative for Supportive Healthcare (WISH) at NJIT, where she advocates for causes relating to women's health on a male-dominated campus. The club has been actively working to promote advocacy for period poverty and breast cancer and is partnering with the local Newark community to allow students to volunteer for causes they are passionate about. Maira is also involved in various other organizations on campus such as the American Red Cross league as the event coordinator and NJIT Green as the environmental justice leader. She aspires to become a physician and hopes to continue her passion for advocacy, public health, and volunteerism.
