Yasmine Lalani

2025 Scholar

Yasmine Lalani is a junior at Mountain Lakes High School with an interest in engineering, science, and communications. As a research and design intern through the National Science Foundation’s Empathy Driven Engineering research grant at the University of Colorado Boulder, Yasmine designs educational tools for visually impaired students and non-profit organizations using 3D printing technology. Through a partnership with the Mountain Lakes Makerspace and the Accessible Digital Literacy Project, she creates Alternative Text (describes images on a web page to help visually impaired people understand content) for children's websites. She is a media representative for the Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey, and her focus has been on reporting and advocating for increased representation of girls in STEM through initiatives with the Girl Scouts organization. At her school, she is a Peer Leader, Vice President of her class, Editor-In-Chief of The Mountaineer multia-media newspaper, EMS Club President, Book Club President, and a varsity swimmer. In her spare time, she is a volunteer firefighter, a teaching assistant at the Mountain Lakes Public Library, a swim coach, and a coxswain for Row NJ. In the future, she hopes to study human-centered engineering design to make the world more accessible for everyone.
